Texas Preview: What will Texas Do?

Posted by Boo Radley on February 17th, 2010 under Basketball

Euclid pretty much outlined what has to be done the next few weeks, and this is clearly a monster game for Conference seeding and NCAA Tourney bids. While I don’t want to jinx it, a win gets us to at least 9-7 in the conference which I think is on the right side of the bubble, but 8-8 is clearly on the bubble. Chet should have more on that soon. So what can we expect

Championship Saturday Post Mortem

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on December 6th, 2009 under Football

Tebow cries, Colt nearly dumps on his career, and Brian Kelly improves his resume. Oh, and Georgia Tech won, but I know nothing about that. A few random thoughts about Saturday's action:

Mizzou/Texas Post-Mortem: The Obvious

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on October 25th, 2009 under Football

Seriously, how bad is Illinois? That was familiar, huh? Instead of writing anything, I should just direct you to last year's review of this game. A woodshed beating was as predictable as a steven or 3 MNC manifesto in the comments section. When the game started and Brent Musberger did his "you are looking live" thing I felt a tiny bit bad that I couldn't make the game. That feeling quickly

Tigers / Horns: An Upset Waiting to Happen?

Posted by Gene Claude on October 23rd, 2009 under Football

Before you go any farther, read Scipio's at Barking Carnival preview of the game here.    His usual brilliant self.   Because I have a few thoughts and a general disdain for the workplace, allow me to retort. I don't have much to add on the offensive side, I think Scipio pretty much nailed it. The o-line has been a disappointment, although I'm never sure how to allocate blame amongst the line, the scheme and the running

Davis v. Yost in Stats that Matter

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on October 21st, 2009 under Football

Earlier I posted a little something on Muschamp's proclaimed Stats that Matter. I will now apply those stats to the Tiger and Longhorn offenses because if they really matter to the defense they must matter to the offense. I have been faithful to King Will's decree that the Stats that Matter are the stats that matter, but think they are a bit incomplete. Spurred by reader Doc Nice's comments, I am

Muschamp v. Steckel in Stats that Matter

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on October 21st, 2009 under Football

Last year the King of Texas, Will Muschamp, spoke of four stats that he considers most important for the defense. Barking Carnival and Atomic Teeth each wrote about it in an effort to track Boom's progress and defend Eberflus's seemingly awful defense, respectively. With the Horns visiting the Tigers this weekend, it's time to reexamine how the defenses are looking. Of course, this year Eberflus is in the NFL

Battlefield Recon – A Look at the Tigers’ Remaining Opponents

NEVADA 2009 Record: 0-2 Last week: L 35-20 @ Colorado State (3-0) This week: Mizzou Nevada’s woes continued in Fort Collins as the Wolf Pack turned the ball over an unbelievable five times.  The WAC preseason offensive player of the year, QB Colin “Bo” Kaepernick, completely shat on himself again throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble.  The Wolf

Battlefield Recon/ Patrick Swayze Tribute

Posted by JR Slim on September 15th, 2009 under Football

Our Tigers survived quite a scare in week 2. Hopefully, they learned some valuable lessons, toughened up mentally, and gained confidence in the late come-back while securing their second win of the year. Meanwhile, our future opponents went 4-4 on the week as Oklahoma State tumbled from their lofty #5 national ranking losing at home to an unranked Houston team and our North Division brethren, Colorado, KSU and Iowa State, embarrassed the rest

Battlefield Recon – A Survey of the Tigers’ Remaining Opponents after Week 1

Posted by JR Slim on September 9th, 2009 under Football

From now to the end of the season, we will take a regular look at Mizzou’s remaining opponents to see what’s poppin’ with the squads still waiting to take their shot at the #25 ranked Tigers. Week 1 saw our non-conference opponents start strong, a once-feared road test at Nevada become more appealing, and our big brothers from the South look fierce. BOWLING GREEN 2009 Record: 1-0 Last week: W 31-14 Troy @ home Next week:

Ask CFN…nicely

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on August 16th, 2009 under Football

I adore college football and get as emotional as the next guy when it comes to my favorite team.  Still, I employ a governor of sorts when it comes to voicing my opinion or dismay.  At least, I like to think I do.   A lot of fans don't. CFN is one of the most read web publications of its kind.  National appeal, prolific, comprehensive, and as recently noted, the CFN writers are wicked smart.

Big 12 Champions – there’s a chance!

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on February 22nd, 2009 under Basketball

UT's upset last night over the concussed Sooners means that Mizzou now holds its destiny in its hands.  Granted, the path to the righteous candidate (Mizzou) is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish (Self and Capel) and the tyranny of evil men (Griffin and Collins).  Rock M Nation breaks down the probabilities from this point forward.  The Boy uses everyone's favorite college basketball ranker, Ken Pomeroy, to come up with: MU's odds of

Fiesta Bowl Thoughts

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on January 6th, 2009 under Football

Congrats to UT for saving Big 12 face.  Losing that game would have been like a swimmer going to the Olympics favored to win seven gold medals and then drowning in the free style.  Anyway, I had some thoughts and I shall now share them. Matt Vasgersian?  Really?  This is what Fox gives us for the second biggest BCS game of the year?  That guy is awful, and I say that as the XFL's biggest fan.  He's

Muschamp and Defensive Stats that Matter (and Mizzou, of course)

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on November 19th, 2008 under Football

We all know Will Muschamp has been named Prince of Texas, the heir to King Mack's throne.  And we know Texans largely agree that the move is totally awesome, that burnt orange is a primary color, and that Cub Scouts should be able to earn capital punishment merit badges.  That's what we know.  But, is it really a good move? I considered writing about the Peter Principle, which is something I never thought Texas would

Get Your Head Up Tigers!

Posted by JR Slim on October 21st, 2008 under Football

Today's ray of hope in an otherwise bleak football world is this: October 20, 2001 - Colorado rolls into Austin with a 5-1 record and gets pummeled by Texas 41-7. December 1, 2001 - Colorado rolls off five straight victories to earn a re-match with the Longhorns.  They meet Texas in the Big 12 Championship game in Dallas and exact sweet revenge with a 39-37 victory. It can be done.  It has been done.  The coaches and players

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on October 19th, 2008 under Football

I thought I'd rip a page from the Barking Carnival play book by doing a GBU for the UT game.   And really, can there be a better time for a Mizzou site to steal a play from a Longhorn site?  If only Mizzou coaches had stolen some plays from Texas on Saturday things might not have gone south that fast.   Alas.  Sigh.  Hmph.  Good grief.  This is how I felt about mid-way through the first quarter:
