Hey now you’re an all star….

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on January 6th, 2010 under Football

It's the time of year for painfully boring all-star games for the high school and college elite. And now there are so many of each, "elite" is not exactly accurate. Still, if a Mizzou recruit or player is in one of these games - something that just five years ago was never an issue - I will watch.

Mizzou DT commit Lucas Vincent impressive in all star game

Posted by Gene Claude on January 4th, 2010 under Football

Missouri commit Lucas Vincent earned rave reviews at the O-D All American Bowl in Myrtle Beach last weekend while playing alongside more heralded prospects (such as Case McCoy).  The 6'3", 270 lb defensive tackle forced a fumble early and had 2 or 3 sacks.  He was described during practices as unstoppable.  All welcome news for a Tiger defense that can use all the help it can get, especially on the interior of the line.  I

Navy Defense.

Posted by rdc1 on December 30th, 2009 under Football

Head coach Ken Niumatalolo has called the Navy defense "the strength of our team" on many occasions this season. Niumatalolo has backed up those words by electing to kick off and put the defense on the field whenever the team wins the pre-game coin toss. Rankings

PILING ON!

Posted by rdc1 on December 30th, 2009 under Football

Mark Mangino was hired in December of 2001 after winning the Frank Broyles award as the nation's best assistant coach in 2000 at Oklahoma. Mike Leach was hired once again, away from Oklahoma to Texas Tech in 2000. They both are really good at running an offense and scoring points. But what's missing here? Why are they fat little a-holes? If Bob Stoops, Mike Leach, and Mark

Navy’s Offense, or watch your knees, boys

Posted by Sheriff Blalock on December 29th, 2009 under Football

As we've all seen and heard by now, Navy runs the ball. They're fourth in the nation in rushing this year, and are consistently in the top five nationally in rushing.

Mike Leach….I told you so

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on December 28th, 2009 under Football

The Barking Carnival network (should I start calling it the FanTake network?) is all over the Mike Leach story. As you know, he's been suspended by Texas Tech for the bowl game based on the complaint of a player and his parents. Joe Schad reports that the player, still unnamed, was isolated in a dark storage closet for hours as punishment for being injured. Awesome! The Mad Pirate is

Lines We Care About (Bowl Edition)

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on December 14th, 2009 under Football

It's almost here.  After a weekend of watching Army/Navy (is that really even football?), the entertaining 1AA blizzard game semifinals, and the D2 Northwest Missouri State Bearkats finally win a championship game, I'm ready for some actual football.  So, without further ado, the opening lines from actual football:

‘Tis the Season for Coach Shopping

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on December 12th, 2009 under Football

KU finds itself in the fortunate position of looking for a head coach in a year where very few BCS schools are doing the same. The fortuitousness doesn't stop there because in the non-Notre Dame division, the KU job looks to be the most attractive opening out there with just a bit of competition from UVA.

Insight v. Texas – what others are saying

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on December 11th, 2009 under Football

I've seen a couple bowl rankings where people, who truthfully, know no more than you or me, embark on ranking the bowls in from best to worst. Basically, from appointment television to According to Jim. Of special interest to us is what they're saying about the Insight Bowl, the bowl who bypassed the Tigers in order to give the world the 6-6 v. 6-6 matchup its been clamoring for, and of course, what

Mizzou rogered by bowls again

Posted by Gene Claude on December 7th, 2009 under Football

Everyone here knows this is the third consecutive year Mizzou has been depants in the bowl selection process.  Each season, though, has involved a different bowl and Big 12 rival(s).  In 2007, KU was selected to go to the Orange Bowl ahead of Mizzou.  In 2008, Nebraska was chosen by the Gator over us and this year, ISU and A&M (and, I suppose OU) were selected by the Insight, Independence and Sun, respectively, ahead of

Mizzou/KU Post Mortem: The Sweetest Victory of All

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on November 29th, 2009 under Football

I love this team. After coming to terms with the fact that demolishing Illinois did not a ten win team make, I learned to enjoy what this team is - a scatterbrained, flawed, but extremely athletic group of fighters. I doubted the last part after the Baylor game, but turns out that was just part of the journey for this erratic and always interesting team. Nothing about the KU game surprised me, except maybe that the

Looking at the Jayhawks

Posted by Sheriff Blalock on November 27th, 2009 under Football

I have to admit, I thought the Jayhawks would win the Big 12 North this year. While that might tell you I don't know that much about college football, it does tell you that I am worried about Saturday's game. Not having seen much of Kansas this year, I'm mystified at their lack of points. Kansas ranks 7th in the conference and 50th nationally with 28.5 points per game. I thought
