Big 12 Bowled Over

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on January 11th, 2009 under

Rightly or wrongly, people use the bowl season as a measuring stick for the conferences.  In a way it makes sense, what with all bowls featuring interconference battles.  In another, more logical way, it's inappropriate because of the small sample size and the analysis coming down to random matchups in random locations.  Whatever.  It happens, and if you can't beat them, join them.  And try to do it smarter.  Here goes. Before the bowls, I analyzed the

Title Game Thoughts

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on January 9th, 2009 under Football

Up until my drive home from work tonight I was completely ambivalent about this game.  I was excited to watch it, but I didn't care who won.  I listened to the ESPN radio pre-game show, though, and heard of the Gator smack talk calling Big 12 defenses "a joke."  That's all you had to say - tonight, I was a Sooner fan.  Also, on the pregame show the ESPN chick interviewed Urban Meyer and asked

Okie State/Oregon Thoughts

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on December 31st, 2008 under

Just a few thoughts from the Oregon victory over Oklahoma State in the Holiday Bowl. Zac Robinson is one tough SOB.  He got hammered on all night to the point where I'm not sure he knew his own name (we already knew he couldn't spell it).  Pretty good for a pasty white suburbanite who used to think tough was his mom being five minutes late picking him up from the Littleton 16 Cineplex. The beatings made him

The Curious Case of Chase Daniel (MU-Northwestern PM)

It's the end of an era and I feel fine.  Tigers win, which is all that really matters.  Winning ugly is still winning.  Losing to that Northwestern team would have been the pinnacle of an embarrassing season where Mizzou adorned preseason mags as a fave for the national championship.  Seriously, those Wildcats aren't that much better than the Big 12's Wildcats.  Losing would have been devastating - to me anyway.  It would have ruined me.  I would

A lone voice in the BCS wilderness

Posted by Gene Claude on November 25th, 2008 under Football

I'm sure this is comes as no surprise to those who know me,  but as the voices clamoring for an NCAA football playoff become ever more shrill and Presidential, I find myself more and more convinced the current system (perhaps with minor tweaks) does a superior job determining the best college football team. Crazy, isn't it?  How could this subjective, multi-part Frankenstein choose the best college football team?  Unpossible! The whole, entire point of the BCS is that

Righteous Indignation….Activate!!

Posted by Chet Gristler on November 12th, 2008 under Football

I’m over the 2008 Orange Bowl.   I really am.   When the BCS selection fiasco went down last year, I truly was apoplectic.  I seethed righteous indignation.   My spleen produced it.  Those feelings were justified.  A compelling argument could not be made that Kansas deserved a BCS bowl bid over Missouri last season.  It just could not be done.  The only argument made without ridicule was the “conference championship game losers never make
