Chase Daniel makes The Economist

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on March 18th, 2010 under Football

Sure, Todd Reesing is known as the brainy short Big 12 QB who likes to fake read The Economist. However, Todd Reesing's photograph, as far as I know, has never made it to the print edition. Chase Daniel's has. See: Feb 13-19, 2010, page 34. He's gotten more face time than any 3rd string QB in NFL history. Must have a great publicist.

One Day ’til “kickoff”

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on March 8th, 2010 under Football

It's not a real kickoff, but finally, my favorite sports team will be chucking footballs around, lining up, wearing numbers, etc. Thank goodness. March 9 marks the beginning of spring practice for Mizzou. Here are five things I'm looking forward to seeing: 1. The QBs, of course. The most intriguing position of all is always one to watch. This year Blaine Gabbert comes in as the de facto starter (as

Mizzou Combiners

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on March 4th, 2010 under Football

Four Tigers were invited to the Combine and three of them participated in drills. As we all know, Danario Alexander's journey to the NFL hit another bump when he needed yet another surgery on his knee. That knee's been open more than Jenna Jamison's mouth (/Gene Claude). Alas, I provide for you now one-stop shopping on the Combine results courtesy of the NFL itself. The NFL's scoop on Danario: Alexander is a huge WR

From the Frozen Tundra to CoMo

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on March 2nd, 2010 under Football

An odd journey to say the least, but a linebacker at Juneau-Douglas High School in Juneau, Alaska is walking on at Mizzou. No mention in this article on how he got hooked up with the Tiger coaching staff and I doubt Mizzou is sending Coach Otterbacher on the bridge to nowhere to scrounge up recruits. Jack Perkins (good football name) is actually a linebacker/fullback. From what I've found, he's 6'1", 225, has a

Official NFL Combine Invite List

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on February 3rd, 2010 under Football

It seems that the new official list (the banner reads 2009, but it's clearly this year's guys) is out and there are some Big 12 additions. Last month I wrote of the first official list and our OBK friend Triston pointed out that additions were still to come. Sure enough, though no Tigers were added so it's hardly very interesting. The new list with additions in italics: Baylor (2): WR David

Live Tiger?

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on February 2nd, 2010 under Football

As opposed to a dead one, of course. Missouri Student Association President Tim Noce is lobbying for an actual tiger to be present on the sidelines for Mizzou football games. He's gone so far as to contact breeders about buying a tiger - the going rate is $13,000 for a tiger - and the St. Louis Zoo about renting a tiger six times a year. I can't say I'm a big

Senior Bowl Reminder

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on January 30th, 2010 under Football

Today at 3 pm on The NFL Network (I know, I don't get it either), a couple Tigers will take part in the Senior Bowl. Here are the Big 12 guys: North team 81 Alexander, Danario WR Missouri 27 Asante, Larry DB Nebraska 29 Brown, Chris RB Oklahoma 59

Reesing, Daniel, and the Shriners

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on January 24th, 2010 under Football

Yes, this is a Mizzou blog. We write about Tigers. Still, I have not hidden my respect for one Todd Reesing, Jayhawk QB. He's gutsy, tough, and is apt at coming up with big plays. He may not have been a great college QB, but he was fun to watch even if you were rooting against him every single snap of his career. Well, he doesn't play for KU anymore

NFL Combine Invites – Big 12

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on January 14th, 2010 under Football

It's that time of year when the NFL makes public those who have been invited to prance and pose their way around a bunch of middle-aged men with beer bellies and too-tight nylon shorts. Surprisingly, invitees almost never say no. In its infinite wisdom, the NFL got its hands on the MU depth chart and decided to invite nearly all the senior starters. Tigers who will be at the combine:

NFL Playoffs – it’s all “Mizzou”

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on January 9th, 2010 under Football

Today the Jets play at the Bengals and Eagles at the Cowboys. The most intriguing thing for Mizzou fans is, of course, that former Tigers playing key roles on the visiting teams. The NFL is finally interesting to me again. As if you needed another reason to like Rex Ryan, the coach who finally figured out that lining Brad Smith up as QB in the Wildcat formation, there's another reason. That Jet formation

AT’s Final Blogpoll Entry

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on January 8th, 2010 under Football

In order to be part of the greatest blogpoll in the history of such things, your blog has to be a going concern for at least six months and at least half your content has to pertain to college football. In '08, AT's infant stage, the writers here longed to be part of the storied tradition. '09 came around and the good people at MGO saw fit to include us. We were

Hey now you’re an all star….

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on January 6th, 2010 under Football

It's the time of year for painfully boring all-star games for the high school and college elite. And now there are so many of each, "elite" is not exactly accurate. Still, if a Mizzou recruit or player is in one of these games - something that just five years ago was never an issue - I will watch.

Texas Bowl Post-Mortem: The Tailhooking

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on January 1st, 2010 under Football

Where to begin? I could start by saying it's crow eating time for Mizzou, the program that whined about being put in the lowest of the low Big 12 bowls and then got thrashed. I could note that the Tigers managed to score a touchdown on its
