Chet’s Chart

Posted by Chet Gristler on September 28th, 2009 under Football

I like Gary Pinkel.  A lot.  He’s built Missouri’s football program from an irrelevant mess to, if not an elite, a more than respectable level.   An interesting exercise is to equate teams from different conferences based on current success, reputation and credibility.  When Pinkel took over the reins in Columbia, Mizzou was the on par with Indiana in the Big 10, Vanderbilt in the SEC, Stanford in the PAC 10.  Now the Tigers are viewed

CFN Hijacks Tiger Bandwagon

Posted by Chet Gristler on September 8th, 2009 under Football

College Football News has been riding shotgun on the Tiger bandwagon since Brad Smith was a redshirt freshman, but the site has now ejected the driver and taken over the wheel.   The recently posted week one rankings of every team puts Mizzou here: 8. Missouri 1-0 Last Week: W, Illinois, 37-9 Why this is too high: This might be a bit ambitious off of one win, but the Tigers were every bit as impressive, if not more so, than the teams over the last few years. The reloading might be done. Why this is too low: There's more speed and talent than the last few years. The defense stuffed the high-end Illinois offense, while QB Blaine Gabbert looked like the real deal and a future all-star. Up next: Bowling Green CFN isn't just driving this train, they upgraded to black and gold spinners, threw in some fine camel hair seat covers and the horn plays 'Every True Son'.  CFN gassing up the MizzouMobile

It’s Finally Here

Posted by Chet Gristler on September 2nd, 2009 under Football

College football starts Thursday.

“Like a kid on Christmas Eve” doesn’t come close to describing my level of excitement.  I’m riding a camel across the desert with a bag of myrrh tied around my waist.  I’m a 35-year-old woman hearing there’s a fifth Twilight book.  I’m Brian Austin Green every morning the last five years.  From Tori Spelling to this.....   My wife can tell it’s coming too.  She’s been moping around for two weeks

Return of the Blackshirts

Posted by Chet Gristler on September 1st, 2009 under Football

If we know anything about the 2009 college football season, it’s the Nebraska Cornhusker defense is back.   There can be no doubt the Husker defense turned the corner in 2008, buying into Bo Pelini’s defensive stratagem.   They were better prepared, tougher, more instinctive and are now ready to wreak havoc on the rest of the Big XII which obviously plays no defense. “…but remember, the Cornhuskers -- unlike most of their Big 12 North brethren --

Bubble Watch – National Edition

Posted by Chet Gristler on February 28th, 2009 under Basketball

While being 'on the bubble' is the accepted terminology for a team flirting with an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, the 'bubble' isn't an appropriate metaphor.  A bubble is round.  A bubble doesn't have strata.  There needs to be a commonly accepted lexicon that allows for teams to have different values of 'bubbleness'.

Texas is still 'on the bubble'.  If the Longhorns lose out including an opening round Big XII tournament game they'll

Getting Old…

Posted by Chet Gristler on December 14th, 2008 under Uncategorized

I was listening to the radio the other day, and one of the talk show hosts said "No soup for you!"   I thought that was a little dated...and after figuring out where I was when I first watched that Seinfeld episode, I figured the phrase had been around for 13 years.  13 years of No Soup for You!   So that got me thinking of some

Righteous Indignation….Activate!!

Posted by Chet Gristler on November 12th, 2008 under Football

I’m over the 2008 Orange Bowl.   I really am.   When the BCS selection fiasco went down last year, I truly was apoplectic.  I seethed righteous indignation.   My spleen produced it.  Those feelings were justified.  A compelling argument could not be made that Kansas deserved a BCS bowl bid over Missouri last season.  It just could not be done.  The only argument made without ridicule was the “conference championship game losers never make

Trash Talk

Posted by Chet Gristler on October 31st, 2008 under Football

Back before Lou Holtz turned into Granny Clampett, he won quite a few football games and developed a (well earned) reputation as a master motivator.  Some of Lou’s more notable quotations:

“Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond.”

“Motivation is simple.  You eliminate those who are not motivated.”

A Lesson Plan for the Husker Fan

Posted by Chet Gristler on October 7th, 2008 under Football

In these breezy, sunshine filled halcyon days of Missouri football, it isn’t difficult to forget most of the 80s and 90s were a wasteland of college football irrelevance in Columbia. Other than the 5th down game, Mizzou didn’t register a blip on the college football Richter scale.  It’s possible a reasonably astute college football fan wouldn’t be able to name a single Tiger from 1984-1996.  Dark, dark seasons.   Perhaps Bo Pelini, all evidence aside, will
