Senior Bowl Reminder

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on January 30th, 2010 under Football

Today at 3 pm on The NFL Network (I know, I don’t get it either), a couple Tigers will take part in the Senior Bowl. Here are the Big 12 guys:

    North team

81 Alexander, Danario WR Missouri
27 Asante, Larry DB Nebraska
29 Brown, Chris RB Oklahoma
59 Dillard, Phillip LB Nebraska
12 Weatherspoon, Sean LB Missouri

    South team

17 Cox, Perrish DB Oklahoma State
33 Houston, Lamarr DL Texas
38 Muckelroy, Roddrick LB Texas
10 Robinson, Zac QB Oklahoma State
55 Walton, J.D. OL Baylor

Danario has a chance to show the scouts and coaches that he can survive in a pro-style offense. He’s had a rough week of practice, so the game and the combine become all that much more important. Here’s CBS Sports’ take on DA’s week:

WR Danario Alexander, Missouri: Like many big receivers, Alexander struggles changing directions quickly — a fact that was quickly exposed in the pro-style offense he was forced to acclimate to this week. The long strider is a good enough athlete to make plays when he gets the ball delivered to him on the move, but the expectations that he could enjoy the same sort of immediate impact in the NFL as former teammate Jeremy Maclin appear misguided.

Weatherspoon on the other hand apparently had a good week. The Post Dispatch reported:

University of Missouri linebacker Sean Weatherspoon was next to impossible to block during one-on-one blitz pickup drills Tuesday morning at the North Squad Senior Bowl practice.

The drill is simple: One rushing linebacker. One pass-blocking running back. The back tries to prevent the linebacker from getting to the imaginary quarterback. On a couple of occasions, Weatherspoon zipped around running backs untouched, one of whom was Oregons Legarrette Blount.

But Weatherspoon got everyone’s attention by flattening Wayne State’s Joique Bell on one rush _ it was basically a “reverse” pancake block with Weatherspoon getting good leverage and knocking down the blocker. The always vocal Weatherspoon responded by hooting and hollering. Nearby scouts checked their rosters to see who was this No. 12 (Weatherspoon) in the navy blue North defense jersey.

Good to see. It’s also interesting to see Spoon has lost about 10 pounds from his 2009 playing weight. Hmmmm, Gene Claude predicted doom for Spoon at 250.

Draft Guys weighed in with:

LB Sean Witherspoon (Missouri): He was a vocal leader in practice, showed a variety of good moves to get off blocks as a pass rusher, and flowed well to the ball. I overheard a scout from an AFC team say after a play on Day Two of practice, “He’s going to be just fine.”

Good luck to DA and Spoon, and the rest of the Big 12ers, today.

  1. Thanks for the reminder. After all this Tebow commercial talk, I’d actually forgotten about the Senior Bowl. Fortunately, I get NFL Network.

  2. What sort of Pro do you guys seeing Weatherspoon being? I know ded at Tortilla Retort thinks he’s been very overrated.

  3. Spoon will be a good pro – maybe not great, but a steady starter for awhile. His senior year wasn’t as good as his junior year, which may have had to do with coaching or may have had to do with his added weight. A lot of people ran with the whole “Spoon is overrated” thing this year, which actually lowered his rating so much that he’s now being underrated.

I’m guessing he’s taken in the second round.

I didn’t see the Senior Bowl, but read that Spoon had an interception, was in a bunch of plays, and gave the pregame pep talk to his teammates. He’s got “it.” He’ll do fine at the next level.

  4. Spoon got a lot of air time yesterday. He mostly played in the middle and he was also on kickoff coverage. He generally looked good with 5 tackles and a INT (returned for about 35 yards). One of his best plays came when he was one-on-one with Dexter McCluster on a deep pass in the corner of the end zone. Although there was a fair amount of contact and the ball was a little under thrown, Spoon got his head around in time to make a nice play. It was impressive to see him stay with Dexter down the field.

Danario looked a little lost and he was clearly out of sync with the QBs on a couple of plays his way.

  5. BTW, Spoon and Danario wore the stealth helmets from the KU game.

Also, Zac Robinson looked pretty good, except the pick by Spoon, and Tebow looked, well, like Tebow.

  6. I think coaching determines how far Weatherspoon can go. he’s always had the physical tools and the makeup, but he just seemed to be keying on the wrong things half the time – like he was flipping a coin and half the time he met at the perfect point of attack and the other half, he just ran himself out of the play entirely.

  7. I’ve read a lot of those sort of comments about him. I’m not sure I buy it. Difficult to finish with so many tackles if you have no idea what you are doing, isn’t it? And surprising that he did so well at the Senior bowl also.

Maybe he just should have been in the middle the entire time. More than anything, that sounds like what has surprised people.
