Okay, I am not going to dwell on this game too much other than I hate losing to them more than just about anything. We just simply do match up with them very well in any way shape or form. Aldrich kills us, and when you add in the Morris twins, we have no answers. When Sherron Collins goes 2-11 with 6 points and we lose by 20, well that just shows that they are pretty good. Hey, bad match ups happen in basketball. It’s why teams with bad guards or slow plodding white guys don’t match up very well against us. Let’s just hope that Senior Day and the Zou help us in the rematch.
The Good: Not very much
Safford: While I think the kid sometimes shoots way too much, he was at least the most aggressive Tiger on the floor. 19 points and 7 rebounds is a very solid game from him However, 15 shots from him is not a good thing when he only makes 5. By shooting 10 FTs he at least showed he was not afraid to take it to the basket.
Five turnovers. I think that’s good, but to me it also means we were not very aggressive. Just stood around outside and passed the ball around.
23 TOs for them. Pretty good, but I was shocked it was that many when I looked at the box score. Sure didn’t seem like it. Pretty sure it was more a result of them actually making dumb mistakes more than us really causing them
The Bad:
English and Tiller continue to struggle. 5-24 combined. IMO it’s because they are both trying to do things they just are not very good at.
Memos to these guys:
Kimmie English you are a spot up, pick and pop shooter. When you try to create your own shot against better teams, he seems to get in trouble. Stay in your comfort zone Kimmie, and knock down the open threes. If you hit those, then other shots will come.
JT, its time to realize you are not an offensive threat. Play defense. Grab the ball on the floor. Disrupt the offense. But please, don’t try to be an offensive option anymore. I love how hard you play, but please its time to step back and re evaluate your game. Help create shots, and not take so many. When you get the chance to go to the hole, be smart about it.
Starting lineup: It is time to start Bowers, Safford, Denmon, Taylor, and Enlgish. To me that is your best five. You bring Tiller, Dixon, and Ramsey off the bench for energy and defense. This team struggles to score, and I want the best offensive team on the floor.
The Ugly:
28% from the field. Blame a lot of that on Aldrich. I have never seen so many ugly shots inside of 10 feet. Just fucking brutal.
Outrebounded 53-28. I don’t recall too many offensive rebounds for us. You don’t expect to win the rebound game, but you would like to think we can keep it closer than that.
Marcus Denmon 1-1, 3 Points. How did that kid only get one shot in 21 minutes and Tiller got 11 and Safford 15? Marcus Denmon needs shots. He is the best scorer on this team and one shot is unacceptable. The coaching staff needs to get him the ball.
Musburger, Knight and Rowe. They all suck. Seriously, I hope we don’t have anymore Big Monday games just because I don’t want to hear them anymore. Come on Brent, you are better than that.
I seriously thought Bobby was going to stop the game and perform a sexual act on Aldrich. Yes Bob, Aldrich is good. We know. Seriously, make it stop. And as for that buddy of his out in Dodge City, I sure wouldn’t be turning my back on Bob when you guys are hunting today.
Holly: Well if you can’t say something nice, well then you know.
Bring on the Pokes.

Out of curiosity, what did Holly have to say?

Thanks for the insights Boo. Despite my embarrasingly awful prediction last night, I’ll come back for more abuse. As bad as Knight is as a commentator, he made more insightful comments in one game than most color guys make in a year. One of those was that we need to get Aldrich to get away from the basket. That means more Bowers and Ramsey making themselves a long distance threat, and trying to drive on him to pick up the foul. It also opens the lane for our slashers.
Like you said, Denmon is our best scorer (English might disagree, but it’s arguable), and I can’t recall him challenging Aldrich once. Yes, you’re going to get blocked and embarrassed on occasion, but you also might pick up a foul and make him sit. If there’s one knock on the big guy it’s that he’ll pick up cheap fouls.
I think you’re right that English tried to do too much last night and took a lot of off balance jumpers off the dribble. But I also think he’s as good at that as anyone on the team. If we’re going to take a bad shot like that, might as well be him. He just had an off night IMHO. But like Denmon, he’s good enough that he should be driving and challenging Aldrich.
I’m not saying anything new here. Even last year when we had a couple of good big guys, we struggled when we didn’t challenge the dominant big men, and we succeeded when we did. You didn’t see Lyons backing down from Aldrich just because he got blocked a few times. It’s harder this year because we don’t have Lyons, but we still have to take that mentality to have a chance.

Come on Boo, give Brent a break. Cole was one of the only names he could say. Well, Cole, Brady, and Kimmie. Hell he called Tyrel, “Taylor” and didn’t even attempt to say Xavier or Zaire.

Mistro – FUCKIN’ A.
Aldrich is a beast, but we repeatedly attacked the paint by beating a guard off the dribble, seeing his looming oafish presence, and trying to fade, float or high bank a shot around him. It made us look like six year olds trying to score against a 20 year old drunken uncle. You have to take it right at him. Make him decide to hold his ground and draw a charge or try and block the shot.
I’m hoping in Columbia Reed, Morningstar and the two Morrises One Cup aren’t as comfortable and composed. Collins will show up for that game for sure, but with another 23 TOs we can turn those into points at home. If we make more than one of four shots we’ll have a decent chance to beat them.

I still say keeping Collins from penetrating is a key in the rematch, but the 800 pound gorilla in the room is Aldrich’s shot blocking. He needs to either be on the bench or away from the basket or it’s just not going to happen. The others I don’t really see being the difference. They are what they are, and we just have to beat them.
Reed is a shooter. It’s just what he does. Leave him open, he’ll make you pay. He didn’t get exceptionally hot. Morningstar is a smart player with good passing skills and impeccable timing. Not surprising that he handled our press so well. He did well against it last year too. Just gotta keep him out of the open court with it. We focused so much on Collins that we let him run free, which in hindsight was even worse. The Morrisses, IMHO, get bothered by the pace and pressure. They’re not comfortable in it even if it doesn’t show up in the box score.
