Mizzou rogered by bowls again

Posted by Gene Claude on December 7th, 2009 under Football

Everyone here knows this is the third consecutive year Mizzou has been depants in the bowl selection process.  Each season, though, has involved a different bowl and Big 12 rival(s).  In 2007, KU was selected to go to the Orange Bowl ahead of Mizzou.  In 2008, Nebraska was chosen by the Gator over us and this year, ISU and A&M (and, I suppose OU) were selected by the Insight, Independence and Sun, respectively, ahead of Mizzou.  You can make a cogent argument that each of these “snubs” actually benefitted Mizzou by allowing us to play in a bowl in Texas.  I’m not here to make that argument.  Rather, I’m here to start a discussion as to why we seem to be stuck in Groundhog Day.

From my brief perusal of the internets, AD Mike Alden is getting brutalized worse than cured meats at the Mangino household.  Some have seized on his comment at the MU/Oregon bball game that he hadn’t spoken to any bowl reps for three days and argued that he clearly is not doing enough to sell Mizzou to the bowls.  I highly doubt that.  If we weren’t sold by Saturday, there was no selling to be done, just annoying people.   He is also being criticized for not publicly dressing down (you choose) the Insight Bowl officials, Big 12 Commish Dan Beebe, Satan and/or Dom Deluise.  However, I’ve also read that, while Mizzou traveled very well to the Cotton Bowl in 2007, we took only 15K combined to the Sun and Alamo Bowls in 2006 and 2008.  One moderately legit criticism I’ve seen is that the Mizzou athletic department does a dismal job putting together pre-packaged bowl trips at varying price levels.  That may be true, but I find it hard to believe such would have made much of a difference.

Also, while our puny little brains have evolved to see patterns in the slightest amount of data, it is possible that the last three years are just a coincidence.  After all, each snub involved a significantly different fact pattern.  In 2007, a one loss KU jumped Mizzou after we lost in the Big 12 championship game.  Last year, Nebraska jumped us to go to the Gator, which was rumored to have serious financial difficulties and needed the Nebraska fan migration to make ends meet.

This year, the Independence logically took nearby A&M and the Insight opted for the energized Hot Dog Stand U fans for a Nordic matchup that should titillate those in southern Minnesota and northern Iowa.  We can bitch all we want about being snubbed for our homely stepbrother ISU, but it is true that Mizzou fans were far from excited about playing Minnie in a crappy bowl game and we should (begrudgingly) admit that the Insight’s Mizzou-related travel concerns were probably well justified.  Personally, I also think guaranteeing ticket sales (and likely being forced to spend athletic department dollars on them) just to get us into the Insight is a poor use of scarce resources.

So, my question…is there something else Mizzou should be doing (other than having better fans)?  Is this Alden’s fault?

  1. It’s probably not a huge deal – although getting passed over for an ISU team with 2 less wins is a pretty big slap in the dick.

If I were you, my bigger worry would be the long term affects of a possible pattern/reputation developing. Individually, these can all be shrugged off with either justification or rationalization. But down the road, when it comes time to decide if Missouri can travel (say there’s a legitimate debate about who to invite to the Holiday Bowl), it’s gonna be tough for Alden to make that argument.

  2. Actually, if we get snubbed next year we might actually end up in the Holiday Bowl since it has already been snubbed by the Big 12 (moving from 3rd to 5th in the pecking order). Maybe that snub will work out in our favor like this year did.

I agree that developing a reputation of not traveling is a bad thing. Perhaps in general Alden should be doing more to turn up the hype machine to energize fans. Hell we here every week from Pinkel how many fans he wants to have in “The Zou” [gay] and what color we are supposed to wear. Perhaps if they set goals for how many fans we need to have at a bowl game and made those very public we might be able to improve our attendance performance. It seems like these sorts of things are pretty contagious. For example the travel plans of our group of 10 to 15 people who travel to away games is pretty binary (i.e., all or nothing) and it wouldn’t take much to swing a few of these sorts of groups to get the snowball rolling.

That said, I really don’t blame Alden here because I think the bigger problem is attributable to the fans not the administration.

  3. my bigger worry would be the long term affects of a possible pattern/reputation developing.

I think that reputation has been firmly developed and established.

I don’t think it’s Alden’s fault – he’s a renowned glad-hander and constant advocate for the school. He’s done so well overall, it’s odd to think he doesn’t know how to sell the school to a bunch of guys in bad blazers. Maybe Mizzou needs to create better travel packages, but if I recall correctly, they did create one for the Sun Bowl that cost $100 for students. Something ridiculously cheap. It involved buses and sketchy hotels in Juarez, but hey, they were trying.

If the bowls really wanted more Mizzou people to attend they’d invite us to better bowls. Or, in lieu of that, create an Arrowhead Bowl or Gateway Bowl.

I’m surprised TV ratings don’t matter. Mizzou has been great for ratings in the past few years. Why doesn’t anyone care? Seems you get more money from sponsors if a few hundred more thousand are watching than if you get a couple more thousand in the seats. I don’t know how all that works.

  4. Until the Big 12 steps in and makes it a requirement that Bowls cannot bypass a team with 2 more wins, it is going to continue to be a problem. You can’t blame the Bowls for picking teams in close proximity, I mean they have to sell tickets. The ISU thing is just stupid, and I hope it blows up in their face. I find it interesting that Matter says in his blog we would have gone to the Cotton Bowl if OSU had beaten OU. I really hate OSU now for last year and now this year.

Bigger question: Should we consider a move to the BIg 10 again?

  5. Crazy to go from the Cotton to the Texas Bowl.

A big problem for Mizzou is that all of these Texas/Lousiana/Phoenix bowls are naturally going to favor the South teams, too.

The Big 10 move might have justification, but it sure isn’t football related. This year, two of the Big 10 bowls were able to pick anyone, regardless of record (because the Big 10 has 2 BCS teams). As Euclid has pointed out, under either the Big 10 or ACC rules, the ISU thing could have happened. This isn’t a conference problem, it is a bowl system problem.

I’m looking forward to the AT NYC road trip for the Yankee Bowl next year.

  6. As GC mentioned some other conferences have “one win” rules but that only applies to conference record. In this case, ISU and ATM are within one win of Mizzou in conference play and could have gone anywhere.

  7. I think the Big 10s “one win” rule applies to overall record, but two bowls (can’t remember which one) are exempt if there are 2 BCS teams.

The moral is that the whole process is a beauty contest and we need to accept that fact that we could use some damn makeup.

  8. There is also a vicious cycle element to this whole thing…we are relegated to worse bowls because we don’t travel well, people are disappointed and don’t go. Rinse, repeat.

  9. If missouri jumped ship to the crappy Big Televen, who would we get to replace them? I think there’d be a strong push for Arkansas to join the South and maybe move Baylor(?) to the North.

  10. Or trade Baylor for future considerations.

If we jump to the Big 10, I will immolate myself.

  11. Re-posted from another article:

    Advantages to Texas Bowl:

    Better opponent
    Better network
    Better recruiting area
Better opportunity for players to play at home
    Better area to recruit
More likely that Mizzou sells more tickets
Less expensive for team to travel (more profit for athletic department)–I guess I should take this off, since Mizzou would have gotten almost half a million more to travel to the Insight.

    Disadvantages:
Even crappier bowl game than the Insight
Don’t get to beat another Big 10 team
Illegal for Will Ebner to spear Dan Beebe for letting us get screwed over for third year in a row

Honestly, I don’t think there’s that much to be done about the bowls, other than have Missouri travel better. Like Gene said, there’s always going to be an inherent bias to the South teams, since they’re closer.

  12. I’d gladly trade Baylor for a team to be named later.

  13. Mizzou is an in a transition phase of the program. We haven’t won long enough to develop a large and wide-reaching fan base. But we’ve won too much to get really excited about playing a 6-6 team in Shreveport or some other low level bowl.

I’ll never forget going to see a Mizzou/Nebraska game at a sports bar in Walnut Creek, California. At 9:30 am, I was the only Mizzou fan in the place…there were at least a dozen Husker fans.

We’ll never have that kind of following, but another 5 or 10 years of consistent winning would get us a large travelling base.

  14. Doc, agreed. I was trying not to fill the post entirely with my point of view…which is thus:

Fans follow performance, not vice versa. Complaining about bowl games screwing us is silly as they are just making an economic decision within the contractual rights they negotiated with the league. Complaining at fans for not traveling is silly because it doesn’t do anything. Win for a number of years, you will have more fans, you will win the toss ups for bowls.

And, besides, outside of about 10 bowls, the rest are largely fungible.

  15. Definitely. And like you alluded to, outside of the people following their conference, most have no idea whether Insight or Texas or Sun is higher than another. They look at the teams playing, and in this case, Texas is way better than Insight.

  16. I don’t want to move to the Big 10, but here’s what it’d look like:

Big 10 East: Penn State, Ohio State, Purdue, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State

Big 10 West: Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, Northwestern, Wisconsin

  17. Fans follow performance

This is definitely true for home attendance. And it lags by a good two three years. I would like to commission a study from you, GC, on this matter.

Re bowl traveldom, I’m not so sure. Iowa State’s performance blows historically, yet they travel well. Or so we’re told.

Doc, you are right. National perception is the Insight is the dregs of the Big 12 bowls, not Texas. That’s kind of why I thought Insight would take Mizzou. Pairing a couple 6-6 teams has to be embarrassing for a bowl with any pride.

  18. The hard part on doing an analysis is finding 5 and 10 year data sets that are apples to apples. I once did a back of the envelope comparison of MU and KSU and it was pretty telling. What are some other schools / time periods that would be relevant? Probably VT.

  19. GC, where would you find that data?

  20. Maybe KU. Oregon State, Maryland, NC State, Rutgers, Illinois….

  21. Doc: Previously I found the data on individual school’s websites. That is time intensive and annoying. I’m going to search around and see if I can find something already compiled. If you see anything, drop a note on this thread.

Phenom, I think what we need is a significant period of time of extreme to moderate suckitude, followed by a significant period of time of goodness. Maybe those schools fit the bill, I don’t know enough about them. I’ll look at college football data warehouse and try to come up with some comps.

  22. This is a staff-wide email sent out by Missouri (forwarded from a friend who is a MU employee)…

“If you are unable to attend the bowl, please consider purchasing tickets to help us build on our already outstanding bowl reputation. The number of tickets that an institution sells strongly affects future bowl selections. Tickets are only $55 each and we will help distribute any unused tickets to local charities and/or members of our student body.”

  23. Season ticket / TSF got one from Pinkel saying something similar. This is a good idea, right?

  24. HenryJames is offering good money for a luggage handler/driver/servant in Pasadena. FYI…

  25. Seems I could handle 1 and 3 drunk. Can I get 2/3 of the money and he can find another driver?

  26. Back to 1998 is the best I can find.

  27. I might try to throw something together later this week with that data, even though it’s only a decade. I tell ya, I’d love to get a hold of some media guides.

BTW, I got an email blast from Texas Monthly Magazine offering 4 game tickets plus non-alc’s and food for $89. It’s offered on the bowl website. in case you’re interested…..

  29. In other news-

I was excited about the Gabbert the younger coming to N, but to no avail.

He said that he wanted to pass around 40 times/game and Nebraska is going back to power football. All ya’ll lack now is Gabbert the lesser.

  30. [...] all their crying about how their football team always gets slighted at bowl selection time you would think that [...]

  31. I have been exploring for a little for any high quality articles or weblog posts in this sort of area . Exploring in Yahoo I finally stumbled upon this website. Studying this info So iˇ¦m glad to express that I’ve an incredibly excellent uncanny feeling I discovered exactly what I needed. I such a lot undoubtedly will make sure to donˇ¦t disregard this web site and provides it a look a relentless basis.

  32. naturally like your web-site but you need to check the spelling on several of your posts. Several of them are rife with spelling problems and I in finding it very troublesome to inform the truth on the other hand I will surely come back again.
