Lines We Care About (Week 7)

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on October 12th, 2009 under Football

A full week of Big 12 chicanery is in the books, and what a week it was. Nebraska takes a stranglehold on the North, contenders KU and UT surprisingly struggle against North cellar dwellers, Bradford comes back and looks good, Potts was gone but TT looked better than ever, and Okie State see-saws to a win in College Station. The favorites all won, but that’s hardly the whole story, huh?

Another full week is on the horizon. As opposed to last week’s double digit line barrage, this one is all about the single digits. Your lines:

OSU off mu EDITED: Vegas has spoken, it’s
OSU -7 mu.
UT -2.5 ou (in Dallas)
NU -6 tt
CU +9 ku
ISU -3 bu
KSU +4.5 a&m

bg -4.5 BALL STATE
nev -10 USU
ill -3 IND

wyo +12 AFA

First, the others. Bowling Green needed a miracle to come back against Kent State. At least they came back and are favored on the road again this week. Nevada clobbered La. Tech, again displaying one of the best rushing offenses in the country. Illinois sucks. And, kudos to Dave Christiansen’s Cowboys for their fourth win on the year – only two from bowl eligibility!

The Big 12. Well, well, well, Vegas loves them some Huskers. After getting it right against the Tigers, Vegas calls for a TD win over the visiting Red Raiders. Texas and OU, two surprisingly warty teams, are about a FG’s difference. And Vegas appears to be waiting to learn more about the health of Gabbert and Hunter and the appeal of Dez Bryant. Can’t say that I blame them.

Because the Big 12 is a boring scheduler, it’s easy to compare the lines from this week last year. Same games. Different venues, except for the Red River Rivalry.

2008 lines:

MU -13.5 osu
ou -6.5 ut (in Dallas)
KU -14 cu
ksu -3.5 A&M
isu +3.5 BU
nu +20 TT

The 26 point swing in the Nebraska game is bar far the biggest.

  1. Off the cuff, I’d take:

    OSU (in a pick ‘em)
    UT
    Tech (maybe wishful thinking)
    KU
    ISU
    A&M

The only one I’d feel good about is Texas.

  2. Glad you posted this. I like that BG line at Ball St. Even though BG screwed me last weekend. Also like the Nevada game. As for Indiana and Illinois, well, I wouldn’t bet on that game for the mere fact I’d be forced to care for that shit show.

Oh well, I got my myself banned from the Bark once again. Supposedly, all because I made the simple mistake of confusing scapula for scalp, which was rather hilarious even to me. As you boys can gather, this was not the real reason though. If they banned people for occasional idiot statements on that site, then few posters there would be on the Bark indeed,

Nope, I got banned because, well, I tend to be always right for one reason or another, and the football, frat boy egos over there just couldn’t stand having someone riding roughsod over them consistently, week in and week out. It seems Scipio over there is particularly sensitive to this, cause there has never been an occasion when his predictions have ever been better than mine, not one instance. I’ve notice that he actually copies my opinions after I have stated them, even though he would never admit it, and of course, in a straight up argument, he has never come close to handling me and he knows he never could.

He has looked for every excuse in the world to edit and delete my posts. Hell, most times he has no reason and just does so out of jealous spite. Everything that I said would happen last year and this year has happened so far, just as I said. What possibly could be the problem with this, aside from the bruised, effeminate, frat boy egos on the Bark?

    The lines:

    MU beats OSU
    UT beats OU and covers
    NU covers against Tech
    KU destroys the Buffs

I have no feel for the rest.

  4. Nevada’s been running wild. Now that they’re the number one rushing team in the country, I hope folks will stop pointing to Nevada’s 214 yards on the ground against Mizzou as evidence that Mizzou can’t stop the run. Stopping the run is hardly Mizzou’s problem.

3 MNC, if you’re wrong about Mizzou beating Okie State, you will be banned from this site. Simple as that. You don’t go around dishing out hope like that with no repurcussions.

WIthout Dez Bryant, OSU has absolutely no chance in this game, that is unless Mizzou amazingly somehow finds a way to lose the game, and I think even for Mizzou this would be an extremely difficult thing to do. Even should Dez be cleared to play, I still say your team will win. You guys have big corners, so they should be able to defend the jump ball, and all you have to do is bracket him to effectively take him out of the game. OSU has few other threats on the team and the team as whole is utterly lacking in speed. From what I saw of the game in the Monsoon, I’d say you guys have the overall speed advantage and it does not appear to be all that close.

From the very first time I saw OSU beating Georgia, I knew they were extremely overrated. The large talent gap between the two teams was clearly noticeable. It was just one of those days for Georgia. Georgia played like they did not want to win and it’s very possible that they really didn’t. Who knows?

Even should OSU manage to put up some points (this would not be a good sign for your D for the rest of the season), the OSU D is so slow and vulnerable, Mizzou should still be able to simply outscore them. A&M is probably the worse Div. I team I have seen this year. They are simply terrible, outside of a few skill positions. They are clearly worse this year talentwise then they were a year ago, even though their record this year might not reflect it. How a school like A&M has managed to get this bad is beyond me. I don’t think I have seen a Baylor team be this bad, but, I guess, I could be wrong about it. A&M is just that bad this year. Their cupboard is really that bare. And yet, even A&M was a few fluke plays away from upsetting OSU. That is just how bad OSU happens to be. I called for an A&M upset last week and I was close. I just underestimated just how bad A&M was. I couldn’t believe how bad they were along their lines. They really stink. It would not surprise me a bit if KSU runs all over them and beats their asses badly this week.

If OSU beats Mizzou, then, you are right, I deserve to be banned and you guys might just want to start considering this suicide stuff. I just don’t see how this could happen, outside of a 5 int or 4 fumble kind of day from Mizzou.

  6. MNC: Tell us how you really feel.

  7. [...] In the meantime you can the Week 7 picks from our good friends at Atomic Teeth. [...]

  8. I really like the KU line. Way too much being made of CU’s aberrational start last week and ISU’s fluky performance.

    I think.

Got a chance to see KSU a little. I take back what I said about A&M being the worse Div. I team I have seen this year. I think KSU is worse and without the playmakers at the skill positions. I look for A&M to make a statement against this KSU team. One of the few statement games they are going to have this season.

  10. What exactly would an A&M statement look like?

    27-24?

    3-0?
