Title Game Thoughts

Posted by Phenomenal Smith on January 9th, 2009 under Football

Up until my drive home from work tonight I was completely ambivalent about this game.  I was excited to watch it, but I didn’t care who won.  I listened to the ESPN radio pre-game show, though, and heard of the Gator smack talk calling Big 12 defenses “a joke.”  That’s all you had to say – tonight, I was a Sooner fan.  Also, on the pregame show the ESPN chick interviewed Urban Meyer and asked “can Oklahoma stop your passing game?  They are ranked 99th in the country.”  Urban talked for a while praising OU’s defense speaking of OU’s “per snap defense” and how OU gave up yards after the games had been decided.  He finished up by saying “whoever uses that number, 99, is not a football person.”  So, then I liked Urban briefly.  Conflicting drive home, let me tell you.  Still, I was all about Big 12 Pride when the game kicked off.  My random thoughts:

  • What’s with the “if you call yourself a sports’ fan, you got to get DirecTV?”  I don’t have it, and now I never will.  I don’t respond well to guilt trips.  Ask my mother-in-law.
  • Tim Tebow takes a lot of heat for his … I’m not really sure why the Internets seem to loathe him so.  It must be the backlash from the media’s fellatory treatment of him.  Brennaman actually said “if you’re fortunate to spend just 15 minutes with the young man, your life will be better for it.”  I almost hated Tebow after that – instead, I decided to just hate Brennaman.
  • Tim Tebow runs the ball a lot, which I think is one reason the NFL isn’t crazy about him.  The perception is if a QB runs, he must not be able to pass.  It’s like how a poor hitting major league catcher is then believed to be a defensive whiz.
  • It’s fun to watch Tebow in the open field.
  • Speaking of the speedy UF track star Demps, color guy said “football and track; there is a difference.”  Got it.  Thanks.
  • Damn, Florida is fast.
  • Damn, Florida’s skill players are fragile.
  • Damn, Florida’s receivers are good.  Aside from its first play from scrimmage, no drops and some pretty great catches in traffic when it mattered.
  • Harvin looked pretty healthy to me.
  • Nelson, who played as much as Jerrell Jackson, makes two huge catches in UF’s final drive.  He looked like Larry Fitzgerald out there.  It’s just not fair.
  • G
  • Fox loves showing the bands, doesn’t it?
  • You notice how Fox avoided missing snaps by going to the quad box?  I didn’t like that either, but at least I got an idea of what was going on.
  • It’s comical how often Fox’s announcers would be talking about something when a commercial would start.  It’s like the producers don’t help the “talent” out at all.
  • I liked how every time Fox used its OU Snap Clock it ticked up to 25 seconds or so and the entire offense was looking at their coaches.   Generally, when OU was able to go quickly, Fox wasn’t able to get the clock up.
  • WE ARE!  FOX SPORTS!  Yes, that’s why I don’t like you.
  • Is Bradford really going to be the #1 pick?  Every time Florida blitzed you knew the play was pretty much over.  He wasn’t going to elude anyone and he doesn’t throw well fading away - he’s no Michael Jordan.  He’s got terrible footwork when forced to move around.  And didn’t OU have any hot reads?  How many times did OU complete a pass when blitzed?  Once?  Maybe twice?  It was pathetic.
  • OU’s receivers didn’t do a lot to help Bradford out.
  • Damn, Florida is fast.
  • Both teams looked rusty.  Just one of the benefits of taking six weeks off before the biggest game of the year.
  • Both teams were lucky that hot cheerleaders is not a category in the BCS formula.  A bunch of hefty uggos.   If the BCS factored in cheerleader hotness, UT would have been playing tonight.  Hell, Mizzou would have finished in the top five even after losing by 100 to OU.  That’s just how hot Mizzou cheerleaders are.

Mizzou cheerleaders

  • Boy, it’s hard to root for a team with Nic Harris.  That guy’s a prick.
  • Back to Bradford.  Does he have a really strong arm?  I didn’t see it tonight.  It was fine, but didn’t dazzle.  He throws a nice spiral.  That’s something.  Of course, so do I.
  • And he’s only accurate if there’s absolutely no pressure.
  • A big story in the game was OU’s inability to score touchdowns, its specialty, when it got close.  Those two first half botches just killed the Sooners.
  • The game was hardly a classic.  Lots of penalties, turnovers, timeouts when all the guy wanted to do was punt the damn ball, band shots, God talk….
  • The most frustrating thing about tonight, aside from abandoning my scruples and rooting for the dreaded Sooners in a lost cause, is the story the media will ignore:  the Gators can thank the Missouri Tigers for wearing out the Sooners in the Big 12 Championship game.  They had nothing left.

Congrats, I guess, to the Gators.  Sooners, way to let the conference down.  I will never root for you again.  So there.

That wasn’t McDonough, Phenom, that was Thom Brenneman. Fox’s college announcing crews are terrible. I actually was wishing Joe Buck was doing the game, at least he can successfully count to three, unlike Brenneman. Tebow is filing his restraining order Monday morning on him.

I didn’t really have a dog in this hunt, but I’m glad more people woke up today thinking Nic Harris is a punk than yesterday. He earns it.

  2. Yikes – I knew that. What’s wrong with me? I’m going to fix that so your comment will forever look erroneous.
