I’m getting cocky and assuming that Mizzou will play in the Big 12 Championship Game, so there are four games left. Only four games left for our Hero, Mr. Chase Daniel, to succumb (or not) to the awesome pressure of Phil Johnson’s lofty and heretofore unattainable Passing Efficiency Record. As I chronicled a mere two weeks ago, Chase Daniel is hot on the trail of Johnson’s record. Without further ado, here are the stats as of today:
|
|
Rating | Att. | Comp. | Int. | Pct. | Yds. | TD | Year |
| Chase Daniel | 173.4 | 360 | 274 | 10 | .760 | 3264 | 28 | 2008 |
| 1. Phil Johnson | 154.3 | 109 | 71 | 3 | .651 | 954 | 7 | 1990 |
| 2. Chase Daniel | 147.9 | 563 | 384 | 11 | .682 | 4306 | 33 | 2007 |
| 3. Chase Daniel | 145.1 | 452 | 287 | 10 | .635 | 3257 | 28 | 2006 |
Chase maintains a healthy 19.1 point lead on Baby Joe the Waterboy Zeus. Not too shabby. Astute readers will note, however, that this lead has shrunk from the nifty 23.5 with six games remaining. Is the pressure setting in? You tell me. Against K-State Chase could only manage a rating of 137.1. K-State? Come on, Chase! You’re better than that. Failing to obtain this record would be a collapse of New York Met proportions.
Phil Johnson’s ghost has sliced 20% off Chase’s lead in two games. What is he going to do over the last four when the opponents aren’t Baylor and K-State? Here’s hoping Chase digs deep and conquers this mighty Aphrodite, er, Zeus. Please check in next week for the next chapter in this dramatic tale of one quarterback’s chase for the record and another’s quest to keep his fill of records.

How many games did Johnson play in 1990?
Please explain how a higher completion percentage and TD/INT posted by 2007 Daniel has a lower efficiency than Johnson.

I think Johnson played in 9 games in 1990, but started just 3. Kiefer’s shoulder exploded that year clearing the way for Johnson to play more. In my previous post on the topic, you can see that Kiefer’s 1990 rating also ranks in the top 10 at Mizzou.
Johnson’s 1990 yard/attempt, a key factor in the rating, was 8.75. Daniel’s yard/attempt in 2007 was 7.65. The formula, taken from the all-knowing Wikipedia, is:
You can really amuse your friends at parties with that….

Johnson had a knack for the deep throw. I didn’t see many of his college games, but he was ahead of me in high school. Funny that he would have any kind of record.

“Please explain how a higher completion percentage and TD/INT posted by 2007 Daniel has a lower efficiency than Johnson.”
Simple. Yards per attempt and yards per completion. The Tigers threw the ball down the field a lot more in those days.
In relation to his peers, Johnson’s efficiency rating in 1990 was better than Daniel’s this year. Johnson led the conference and was 4th nationally. Where does Daniel rank?
The spread offense has inflated QB numbers. It’s almost an apples and oranges comparison, sort of like comparing the HR records of Barry Bonds and Roger Maris.

If Johnson had 400 pass attempts, his efficiency rating would have plummeted faster than Kevin Costner’s career.

I wonder what Johnson is doing these days? He is probably like one of those old champs who sits around and talks about how good he was back in the day, trying to defend his own honor. Those stories are so sad.

I heard he’s out of the closet now.

I read the white whale post to find out what all the nicknames meant. I didn’t really know Phil, but he did seem like a quiet guy. He definitely didn’t seem like a jerk. Not saying anything about Chase Daniel either. He seems perfectly fine. I don’t know if I would pee my pants over Warren Buffet though.

You must not have seen Swing Vote. Kevin’s back.

I heard Phil Johnson once hit a softball so far that it is still in the air.

Chase Daniel hit one farther this year, but Phil’s is catching up to it.

I’m starting to wonder whether this site has evolved (or devolved) into a Phil Johnson fetish site?!

What site isn’t a Phil Johnson fetish site, really?
And why would Daniel try to do this to Phil? I just don’t get it. I thought I would never see the day when Phil’s 7/3 TD/INT ratio would be challenged. (OK actually it wasn’t really a “ratio” but still.)
I once saw Phil hit a softball so hard that God changed the rules of baseball and softball to only allow 3 outs per inning, and He also made it so that no one would remember that the rule was even changed.

[...] When we left last our Passing Efficiency combatants, Chase Daniel held a slight 19.1 lead over the man who once graced the pages of a Sandra Bernhard-covered magazine. Since then, Chase played the Sisters of the Poor co-ed team against whom he registered a rating of 160.4. Not bad, but below his season average. The gap between the two has narrowed to 16.9. [...]
