The Unsung Hero

Posted by Gene Claude on October 28th, 2008 under Football

Per Dave Matter:

With another 16 points off his right foot, kicker Jeff Wolfert took a few steps closer to legitimate All-American consideration. Wolfert is on pace to set an NCAA record for career accuracy on field goals and PATs. Wolfert is a combined 210 of 220 for his career (95.5 percent). The NCAA career record for combined kick accuracy is 93.3 percent set by UCLA’s John Lee from 1982-85.

I’ll confess that I’m not really up on the relative performances of kickers nationwide, so I have no clue whether Wolfert is going to end up as a consensus-type All American this year.  I have to believe, however, that he is going to win some All American awards.  And so my question is….does Mizzou end up retiring Jeff Wolfert’s number?  That would be sort of cool, sad, disgusting and funny all at once.  Like Ron Jeremy flicks.

  1. Let’s hope Wolfert’s NFL career turns out better than John Lee’s. All you football Cardinal fans know what I’m talking about.

  2. I think if Wofert wins the Groza award he will be put on the Wall. Call me crazy, but outside of Coffman, I think he will be the most missed player next year. At least at QB/WR you can see who will step in. I have no idea about replacing Wolfert. He has been such a weapon, almost automatic. Outside of the block against OSU, the only two kick he has missed in what seems like forever have been over 50 yards.

  3. Some guy named Daniel might be missed.

I agree that Wolfert will be missed, but I have no idea how much. Wolfert appeared out of thin air, I’d like to see what else Pinkel might have up his sleeve before I panic.

By the way, we haven’t discussed here Pinkel’s new dual headed squib punting strategy. I really think it is incredible. I have no idea if it is a good idea, but I like that we are thinking outside of the box.

Concur to the highest degree on the punt strategy, GC. It’s a great solution to not having lots of faith in the punt game. I believe that Colorado had two returners back last week at least once, I wonder if that was to prevent the squib. He was in the middle of the field, so possibly not.

Unfortunately, we have about 15 players that will be in the discussion for “most missed” next year. I think I’ll miss the winning most.

  5. I am not saying Daniel will be missed. IMO he is the best we have ever had. But, we have a 5 star recurit to take his place. Will he be as good as Chase? I hope so, but I seriously doubt it. But we at least have something for next year at the position. Nothing I have seen or read suggests we have a kicker. That’s my only point. Of course we can have a contest like TTU and find one, and then my thought is completely wrong. I hope we do.

  6. Ron Jeremy…was that entirely necessary?

  7. If he has 6 attempts per game for the last 6 games, he only has to make 80% to break the record. Given most will be PAT, he’s essentially a lock to break the record. Of course Lee had 92 career FG attempts compared to Wolfert’s 61 thus far. Wolfert’s taken a little leaser route to get to his record.
